Relatives embrace the common duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of death and human-like body temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the structure begins to collapse, the "fragrance" fades and the bugs begin to move out. As they go away, the beetles rub up towards the pollen within the male flowers and are actually prepared to hold the pollen to a nearby feminine flower. Only a handful of these unusual Indonesian plants bloom annually at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one known backyard in the area that grows this exotic species.
