Relatives include the common duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the primary stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of dying and human-like body temperatures, creep inside the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive feminine flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to break down, the "fragrance" fades and the insects start to move out. As they leave, the beetles rub up against the pollen in the male flowers and are now prepared to carry the pollen to a nearby female flower. Only a handful of those unusual Indonesian crops bloom every year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one recognized backyard in the region that grows this unique species.
