Relatives include the frequent duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of death and human-like physique temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like construction and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive feminine flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to collapse, the "fragrance" fades and the insects begin to head out. As they go away, the beetles rub up towards the pollen in the male flowers and are now prepared to hold the pollen to a nearby female flower. Only a handful of those strange Indonesian plants bloom each year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one identified garden in the region that grows this exotic species.
