Relatives include the common duckweed, skunk cabbage, calla lily and Jack-in-the-pulpit. During the first stage, carrion beetles drawn by the stench of demise and human-like physique temperatures, creep contained in the vase-like structure and unknowingly deposit pollen on the receptive female flowers. During the second stage, the construction begins to collapse, the "perfume" fades and the bugs begin to go out. As they leave, the beetles rub up towards the pollen within the male flowers and are now prepared to carry the pollen to a nearby female flower. Only a handful of those unusual Indonesian plants bloom each year at public gardens worldwide. SDBG is the one known garden within the area that grows this exotic species.
