For several applications, the rate of information creation is much more essential than the quantity. Real-time or almost real-time info makes it feasible for a company to be much more nimble than its rivals. For example, our colleague Alex "Sandy" Pentland and his team at the MIT Media Lab used area information from cellphones to presume how many people were in Macy's parking lots on Black Friday-- the start of the Christmas purchasing period in the United States.
